Oh my! We're pregnant!!

It's positive!! We're expecting!! Three days later my GP confirms the happy news, and sends me off for an ultrasound. This is how unser kleines Bärchen looked on February 17th:

By March 4th, a heartbeat was visible, and kleine Bärchen had grown!

The sonographer pronounced kleine Bärchen as being 7 weeks and 2 days along. And that heartbeat was a beautiful sight!
By 10 weeks, my morning sickness was letting up, and I was finding it hard to believe that I really was pregnant. At 12 weeks, the morning sickness disappeared completely. Sounds odd, but I missed it - as perhaps the best-known sign of pregnancy, it was reassuring. (Not to say I was delighted to have it return in the second trimester!!) We decided to rent a Doppler. On April 8, Werner and I drove out to Delta to pick up a Doppler from Tummy Tickles. After fish and chips and then a walk in Steveston, we finally headed home. As nervous as I was (what if we couldn't find it??), I could scarcely wait to listen to the heartbeat. Lots of anxiety and ultrasound gel later, we found it. We weren't exactly sure what we were listening for, but there was no doubt when we heard that little tiny heartbeat racing at about 160 beats per minute. Such relief!! Werner suggested I use the Doppler perhaps weekly, for reassurance; daily was my plan! At our prenatal appointment later that month, we asked about this and were advised that there no risks associated with Doppler use. So daily use it is, until the baby's movements become regular enough to provide the reassurance.
The Doppler kept me convinced that I really was pregnant (and not just overeating) until we had another ultrasound. At 7:30 am on May 15th, Werner and I accompanied my very full bladder to Women's Hospital. Of course, once the sonographer started, she decided (as has happened at every ultrasound I've ever had) that my bladder was too full and needed to be emptied. {sigh} It didn't matter, though, for soon we were watching our little bear dancing, squirming, and hiccupping. At one point, das kleine Bärchen stretched out as though just waking up and getting ready to start the day. Oh, and the little feet - I've fallen in love with those tiny feet!

We could have happily stayed there all day. And all night, and the next day and night too. It was mesmerising to see our kleine Bärchen.
At our prenatal appointment later that week, the resident gave us a photocopy of the radiologist's report. How reassuring it was to see every single box checked off as normal!
It was time to let ourselves start to get excited. There really was a baby in there, and so far, so good!
