Test drive

I remember reading somewhere on the Bugaboo website that their strollers are supposed to be good in snow. On Sunday, we took the opportunity afforded by the rare Vancouver snowfall to test this claim.

Our tests involved using the stroller as we normally do - big wheels in the back, small wheels unlocked - as well as reversing the direction with the small wheels locked and unlocked.

The result? The best arrangement had the big wheels in front and the small wheels locked.

Nevertheless, the heavy, wet snow stuck to the small wheels and clogged the spokes. The large wheels sailed through the snow, but the small wheels just weren't happy. Our walk around the block gave quite a good workout.

My conclusions? The big wheels gave enough stability that I'm sure the stroller fared better than the more common stroller design (such as Graco or Peg Perego) that employs only small wheels, and probably not quite as well as a jogging-type stroller would have done. Furthermore, in dry, fluffy snow, the stroller likely would have been fine, as the only problems arose when the sticky snow clogged the small wheels and prevented them from spinning as needed.

(This is what my research career has come to?)
