The Austrian Death Trap

So the hotel knew that we were coming with an infant and they had arranged a crib. Werner even called to confirm that there'd be a crib, because otherwise we would have just brought the playpen along. (With the amount of luggage we had, what would one more piece have been anyway?)

This is what they provided:

This photo isn't great for scale, but I could easily pass my fist between the slats. Probably even my knee. And what the photo doesn't show is that the crib was so ricketty that it I feared it would collapse if Jakob so much as snored.

What really baffles me is that, with beds like this1 - really, two twin beds pressed near to each other - it must take a certain amount of, um, creativity for Europeans to even make babies; why would they then endanger them in wobbly death traps?

Since he's still not all that mobile, we ended up spreading out on the floor the duvet the hotel provided and using that as Jakob's bed.

1 I really really hope this isn't the kind of bed we'll have in Kiel... but, then, we'll also be sharing our one-bedroom Wohnung with Jakob, so what does it matter anyway?
