Dammit! We're trendy again!

This morning, when I turned on the TV, it was tuned to the American station Werner had been watching last night. The news was on, and my ears twitched when I heard that the upcoming story would be about the most popular baby names of 2006.

Guess what? "Jacob" was the most popular boy name in the US last year.

Today's Parent lists "Jacob/Jakob" (yes, both spellings) as being #4 in Canada last year. According to BC's Vital Statistics branch, Jacob was the second most popular name in the province. There were 235 baby boys named Jacob, and - believe it or not - 30 named Jakob. That's our Bärchen plus 29 other baby boys born in British Columbia in 2006. (I can't help but wonder whether the other parents spelled it with a 'k' to be different or because of heritage, as was the case with us.) There were also 6 boys given the name "Jakub".

PS - In BC last year, there were no Werners and only 8 Melanies. And 10 Phoebes. But, of course, we named our Phoebe in 2005!
