Dear Jakob

Mama wants to say she's sorry that today will be boring for you. I'm afraid we won't have lots of playtime today. Good thing Nanny gave you Baby Bach. I saw how much you liked it, and so I bought you three more Baby Einstein DVDs - Baby Mozart, Baby Beethoven, and Baby Galileo. (I am still looking for Baby Neptune.) Today you will spend a lot of time in either your swing or your Bumbo seat, watching these DVDs. Maybe I'll show you Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat again, you seemed to really enjoy that on Tuesday. I promise it will be the professional show, not the one I was in.

I know today will be really dull, but tomorrow will be exciting. Do you remember having to go for your passport photo when you were just a few weeks old? Not even five months old, and already you'll be using those passports! Because tomorrow you get to go on a plane for the first time! And your friend Tilman will be on the plane, too! And on Saturday you'll get your first train ride, and then you'll meet Oma and Opa and Onkle Johannes and Tante Katja and your cousins Hannah and Jonas. Everyone will be so happy to see you and hold you! You might be tired and confused after being on the plane for so long, but I hope you'll share your beautiful smiles with everyone.

If you're bored today, try practising your German. You know, that throaty growling sound you like to play with. Because for the next week you'll be hearing lots of that. And since Mama's German isn't very good, she's going to count on you to help her learn the language with you.

So today Mama's going to wash and pack your clothes (and hers and Papa's too) and make sure Phoebe gets lots of love and attention and playtime. Mama'd also like to clean our house, too, because she's very embarrassed that it is so messy and doesn't like the idea that Helen and Michael will see it like this. She also has more thank-you cards to write on your behalf. It's a good thing Papa decided we'll eat out tonight!

Today is just one day. You'll have lots of time in the next few days cuddling with your family in Germany, and then you and Mama will have lots of fun together exploring Austria while Papa teaches. Won't that be nice!

I love you, my little bear.

Mama
