YoweeeeEEEEE!

I'm just back from an impromptu medical appointment. My right hip has been hurting lately, as has my pelvis. It isn't getting better, and considering I still have a trimester to go, I expect it is going to get worse yet. But getting up and down stairs has become more difficult, and if you've been to our home, you'll know this is a problem.

I know that during pregnancy hips spread and connective tissues soften. How else am I expected to squeeze another human being into this world? In fact, my hips began to spread more quickly than I really expected; I couldn't get my favourite jeans over my hips long before the first trimester was out.

So I called the clinic, and was told I should come in if I have so much as an ingrown toenail. (No problem there, although my legs seem to be growing longer. Why else would it be getting more difficult to reach my feet?) In fact, I was in two hours after calling the clinic.

The staff GP who saw me quickly diagnosed the hip pain as a form of bursitis, and suggested a couple of exercises which may help and recommended I try an icepack. As for the pelvic pain, she had to poke around a bit to find out where the problem lay. Holy cow, when she found it, I nearly leaped right off the exam table!! There's a ligament that binds together different bones of the pelvis, and mine is being stretched so a gap is sort of forming. When I squat down to pick something up (or retrieve our mail from the mail box - this might soon become one of Werner's jobs), it hurts to bring myself back up to standing. Lately, even getting out of a chair has been a bit uncomfortable.

Fortunately (maybe), the exercises the GP suggested for the bursitis may also help with the pain from the spreading. (Although I'm not exactly sure how.) Other than that, I might soon be relying on a big belt across the hips to help hold my pelvis together. Mommy or mummy?

On the upside, this is apparently rather common. All I had really hoped for was a nice, normal, boring pregnancy. I'll take these as signs that my wish is being granted.
