Another prenatal appointment, another resident
If I haven't lost count, that makes 5 residents for my prenatal medical care. The competence has ranged from inept to confident, but honestly I'm getting rather tired of the revolving door. The resident before this one was a foreign-trained physician who was repeating her residency in order to be licensed in Canada (well, BC, to be precise), so she already had a fair amount of experience. She was a bit scattered (always needed to use my watch to figure out Bärchen's heartrate), but otherwise was quite good. We thought we'd get to keep her. We were told we'd need to have a different resident for the 34 week appointment, because she was going on vacation. What we hadn't been told before yesterday is that, athough she's back, she's on a rotation somewhere else right now and only in the clinic on Tuesdays (I think), not the day of the prenatal clinics (Thursday).
So another resident added to the list. He seems fairly competent, but he's a he. Personally, I prefer a female physician, when possible. But we seem to have a choice of either experienced (ie, more than a few days out of med school, like resident #3), or female (like residents #1, 2, and 4). I'm not delighted by this.
If I had known that we'd have such turnover in residents, I definitely would have thought twice about staying with this clinic for prenatal care, even though the GP is excellent and I've heard nothing but glowing reviews about him from all corners. I recognise that, when it comes time, there's a very good chance there will be a different GP actually delivering the baby, not to mention however many residents and med students in attendance, but that will be in a condensed period of time. I definitely wish we'd had more continuity of care throughout the pregnancy, and now openly wonder whether this was for the best. I'm all for education (obviously), but wish I hadn't made Bärchen into quite so much of a guinea pig.
