We'll rant and we'll roar like true Newfoundlanders

This baby might end up with Vancouver listed on its birth certificate, but I am bound and determined that it will know where its parents came from. Werner will speak German to Bärchen (so maybe it will understand its own nickname?), for one thing. And on my side, I'll be making sure that Bärchen knows that the Atlantic Ocean flows in my veins. We'll be going to Newfoundland (and Germany, for that matter) next year, and so from a very early age this child will not only have to learn how to put up with long distance air travel with Air "We strive to alienate our customers" Canada, but will be exposed to our respective birthplaces and cultures.

But, you see, I've already begun my indoctrination. Over the years, I've lost track of how many people I've met who've said that their mother or father was from Newfoundland, but that they themselves had never been there. Their loss, truly. Newfoundland is a unique corner of Canada, even of the world, and too often overlooked. I will make sure that Bärchen has every opportunity to know this.

As part of this indoctrination (never mind for my own happiness) I've listened to a whole lot of Great Big Sea. I've got the complete set of CDs, and Bärchen has heard each one countless times. Which means Bärchen has also heard its mother sing and felt its mother dance, because how can I not when I'm listening to Great Big Sea?

Tonight we're going to hear Great Big Sea live in concert at Stanley Park. Given that it's an outdoor concert (think Vancouver rain) and given that I've reached the point of having ok days and not at all ok days, we left the decision to the last minute. In other words, I bought the tickets yesterday. I suspect we've got pretty bad seats, but at least we have seats.

So Werner and I will have one more night out without having to worry about finding a babysitter, and Bärchen will hear my favourite band - from my favourite place in the world - live and in concert, as they say. But, for our yet-to-be-born child, this might not be such special experience. After all, this is the second Great Big Sea concert that Bärchen will attend. The first was on February 9 - four days before we even knew that Bärchen would be joining the family.

What a fortunate baby!
