Nesting

A few days ago, I mentioned to Maria all the baking and cooking I've been doing. Nesting was her diagnosis.

I've heard of women late in pregnancy engaging in nesting; that is, getting the home in spic-and-span condition and otherwise making sure everything is ready for bringing the newborn home. Preparing and freezing meals I guess is an obvious one for me, but I've also had cleaning urges. I simply must scrub every window and screen in the house. (Ah, the joys of living in a new neighbourhood - dust storms in the home.) The dining room curtains, coated with Phoebe fur and construction dust, are begging to be washed. (But getting them off the rod, and then hung again, is a two-person job.) The oven needs to be cleaned. (That much is true, pregnant or not. But to tell the truth, I'm afraid of the self-clean cycle, or at least the manual's warnings of potential fires and other scary affairs.) We inherited a trunk that has to be aired out, because it reeks of mothballs. (It's too bulky and heavy for one person to carry outside, and it has to be brought outside to be aired out. Mothballs are toxic to cats, and unpleasant to everyone else.)

Werner, however, is getting extremely protective of me. I know he'd be pretty unhappy (if not distressed) if he came home to discovered I'd not only been lugging the stepstool all over the house but climbing up and down it all day. (Not to mention that Phoebe just has to be on the stepstool if either of us is using it.)

I bought some Method brand cleaning supplies yesterday. They're supposed to be biodegradable and non-toxic, which definitely speaks to me. Do they work? We'll see. For now I've just bought the shower cleaner (it is getting hard to clean the shower properly; this stuff is meant to be squirted on post-shower to prevent build-ups. I hate cleaning the shower after I've gotten clean myself, but this seems to be the lesser of two evils.) and the stainless steel cleaner (I will forever resent the developer's project manager for sticking us with cheap, crummy appliances in dirt-magnet stainless. If they were professional-grade appliances, then at least the stainless steel would be fitting, but our kitchen appliances are mutton dressed as lamb.). They also have granite cleaner, which I'd be more comfortable using in our home than the stuff from the hardware store, and all-purpose cleaners, too. I'll try these first two out and see how they go.

And if they work, I have walls and baseboards to wash, floors to scrub, light fixtures to clean.... No end of surfaces that require cleaning.

I only hope that nesting will bring with it the burst of energy needed to accomplish all that has to be done.
