"Haven't you had that baby already?"

Today I stopped at one of the greengrocers we regularly patronise. As I was paying, the young clerk asked me when the baby was due. "October 17," I answered. "I was wondering," she said, "because when I saw you, I thought to myself, 'Hasn't she had that baby yet?'"

On the one hand, I'm surprised to get that already. Yes, I'm almost 8 months pregnant, but I still have two full months before the due date!

On the other, it was kind of sweet. Afterall, she doesn't know me except perhaps by my produce preferences. We don't know each other's names. Yet she's been keeping an eye out and waiting for Bärchen to make his/her appearance. (Or, at least for me to not be pregnant anymore.)

All in all, I was amused.
